Orderly books, 1778-1781.

Orderly books, 1778-1781. The first, dated September 21, 1778 - December 12, 1778, from Providence, R.I., contains General John Sullivan's headquarters orders, Brigadier General Glover's brigade orders, and a few regimental orders; it was kept by the adjustant, Captain Simon Larned. The second, dated October 7, 1780 - November 19, 1780, contains Washington's headquarters orders from Paramus and Totoway, as well as wing, division, brigade and regimental orders. It also includes an Act of the Continental Congress, erasing the name of Benedict Arnold from the register of officers of the army. Two typed copies are shelved with it. The third, dated July 31, 1781 - August 2, 1781, from Philipsburg, contains headquarters orders of Washington, division and regimental orders, including some accounts of courts-martial. It was kept by Simon Larned. The orders take up only 17 p. in a notebook of approximately 160 p., the remainder of which contains a diary, dated 1826-1827, made up of brief entries detailing farming activities and business transactions, presumably related to Larned family property in Massachusetts.
